The Beginning of the End

It's happened.

The end that I've been working toward and dreaming of and planning for since I called Pete to tell him on December 31 that I loved him is finally beginning.

We ordered our rings and got our marriage license today.

After picking out the perfect setting for my grandmother's diamond over lunch, we hopped in the car and headed over to the courthouse.

We had some trouble parking, so we had a bit of a walk to the courthouse. Pete ran to the bank to get our $30.00 cash while I stowed my camera phone and recovered from the heat. He came back, and my heart smiled. I got stopped in the metal detectors because of my shoes. We got directions to the clerk's office, climbed eight steps and went left.

At the public services window, we were given a form to complete with our information and our parents' information. We filled it out and then we took an oath to apply for our marriage license.

"Just say 'I do'," the court clerk instructed.

Easier said than done, was my terrified thought as I felt Pete grabbing for my left hand behind his back.

His ears were red. He was cracking jokes at an insanely fast rate. Really corny jokes. My heart was pounding, and there were butterflies in my stomach. I felt like I might be blushing.

We're really doing this...

It's here. It's really here. It's real, and it's happening. It's not just something I want or something I want to want. In some ways, it feels like the most natural thing in the world, and in others, I feel as though I'm watching myself do something I always dreamed of and somebody else is doing it.

I have a personal shower next week (one of those giggly, girls-only kind), and I'm down to the last few wedding details, figuring out how to order candles and remembering to buy sand to put in the buckets to extinguish them.

I can hardly believe it. I'm not ready for a wedding. Being married to Pete, that's easy. But not the wedding.

Hmm...

*mischievous grin*

We have a marriage license now...

We could elope!!!!

Well, I have it on good authority from Pete that we could do it--IF we actually show up at the wedding... So the cost-benefit analysis doesn't really work out in the long run anyway! :-D

The gentlewoman from California (or can I say Virginia yet?) would like to register the following:
It is the opinion of the gentlewoman that the title of this blog is a misnomer. The End?? (I reference Gandalf's look to Pippin in ROTK: "I didn't think it would end this way." "End?")
This is a beginning!! Unless you're planning on shipping off to some exotic locale like Phoenix (hack, cough) there is nothing wrong with this! End, my left foot... O:-)

Well the license isn't valid until the minister signs it anyway...so, you might as well wait till the wedding... ;-) -Vanessa
