When I Grow Up

The last week or so, I've been considering the merits of building our own home when we eventually decide to buy. This last rental cycle has been awful for me. I never imagined what it could be like choosing a house with a baby in mind. Things that Pete and I could make do on just won't work for Piper.

So I'm dreaming a little to keep my mind off the mess here in my house.

The house I would build would be in the country, on a couple of acres, five at the most so Pete wouldn't have TOO much mowing to do. It would definitely have to have a few mature trees, so we'd have to be careful about removing trees that were there. I would plant lilac bushes around the house - a whole bunch of them, because lilacs are my favorite flower. And tulips. I'd plant tulips for the springtime.

It would be a butter-yellow house with dormers. It has to have dormers, because I love window seats. There will be a lot of windows so that the inside is very bright. It might have two floors and three bedrooms, but no more than two full bathrooms. I've cleaned enough bathrooms to last me a lifetime.

The trim inside would be white, and the wood trim and cupboards would be light-colored. The kitchen would be an eat-in kitchen - no fancy dining room. It must have a fireplace - though I haven't decided if it would be real wood-burning or gas. Probably real.

It will be a simple house, with a front porch where I will keep my porch swing to sit and watch the sunset while my children chase fireflies in the summer twilight.

Maybe I won't have to build it. But it's fun to think about anyway.

I think I would like to live somewhere someday where my children can chase fireflies. . .
