License Plate Encouragement

Friday, January 13, 2006

Last night, when I was at a stoplight in Springfield, Virginia, I glanced over at a car nearby and noticed a "reference" on the license plate.

JER 3040

Hmm.

I knew that the book of Jeremiah had some long passages in it, so it seemed plausible that it could actually be a Bible verse. I looked it up.

No Jeremiah 30:40. So the license plate *wasn't* a reference.

Shaking my head at myself and wondering why I had thought that God might be sending me to look it up, I started to put my Bible away and stopped, noticing that Jeremiah 31 had exactly 40 verses. Curious, I decided to see what it said.

"And the whole valley of the dead bodies and of the ashes, and all the fields as far as the Brook Kidron, to the corner of the Horse Gate toward the east..."

I got through the first part and nearly slammed the Bible shut. Dead bodies and ashes? Good GRIEF. Talk about NOT comforting right now, God. I need some encouragement!

My eyes moved a little further down the verse, waiting for the judgment and destruction.

"...Shall be holy to the LORD. It shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore forever.”

*blink*

I have a theory that as long as I end up in Scripture, gaining encouragement from license plates is probably not illegal in God's book.
