Reckoning

"Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

Saturday's verse for the day surprised me.

What, no beating myself up and living under condemnation and doing penance to justify my wrongdoing so that I can approach God? Hmm. There's got to be a nine-step method to perfection somewhere in this verse...?

Oh.

"...alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord..."

I stumbled across a Wikepedia entry for "dead reckoning" this morning, which defines it as "the process of estimating one's current position based upon a previously determined position, or fix, and advancing that position based upon known speed, elapsed time, and course."

For believers, the "previously determined position" is "dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord."

I like that.
