A Bit About Discipline

Saturday, November 8, 2008

One of my favorite bloggers who has just gone private posted a story about disciplining her son recently, and I just can't get this last paragraph from her post out of my head.

I wish I would remember more often that discipline is training. Not hitting. Not berating. Not guilt-tripping. Not embarrassment. Not shaming. Not condemning. Not yelling. Love is what produces change. Anger breeds resentment. Love softens the heart. Love should be at the center of all our discipline, every time. I'm sorry to admit that too often, anger is. Consequences might hurt or be yucky - but the discipline, the training of the heart, doesn't have to be.

She speaks so much to my own walk with my heavenly Father, who gently trains the heart and is still there - even when there are consequences.

No more condemnation.

I love this.

I just finished "Shepherding a Child's Heart" and this paragraph could sum up the book. Although I didn't agree with all the book had to say, I'd say I agreed with 90% of it. It's so important that discipline point us all, child and parent, to Christ and HIS love for us.
