I knew.-------------------------------
I knew You.
I knew what it was to be with You
to be taken by You
to hope I could be
so beautiful as You were
always so beautiful as I was
when You were
with me.
he played me for a fool
serpent writhing round the tree
round my imagination
round my soul
and squeezing
doubt from wonder
offering more than I had, more
than evening walks
than waiting for You
than listening.
he painted Love
etching on sea-washed sand
slipping
through my fingers
and I couldn't lose You
who were so beautiful to me
I ate.
I ate it and I shared.
I ate it hoping to capture You for me
to grasp knowledge You were holding out on me
You must have been...
so innocence died
my being destined now to strive with Yours
my child-birth travail
screaming with tree and earth and universe
against him
groaning lonely for Your once-known Presence
learning to wait
trying to listen
even when You speak no words.
And always hoping Love will be more, more
than he said it was
than I had experienced
than I suspected
when I ate.
I am never full now.

Oh, I so like this one, Kelly!
Isn't it wonderful that at least three of us wrote about Adam and Eve and God and produced three such remarkably different poems?
What a pleasure to read yours.
"I am never full now"
That part made me sad.
It is a sad thought...the regret they must have tasted every day. So gripping.
Oh .... wow.
This gets me here:
to grasp knowledge You were holding out on me
"Round my imagination/Round my soul."
Like this a lot, Kelly.
I am never full.
Ugh...that describes "the fall" with such feeling.
to grasp knowledge You were holding out on me.
Wow. You have such an amazing gift, Kelly.
I know this isn't too poetic but the phrase "junk food" rumbles through my mind ... all he had to offer was junk food. You lay down your words so beautifully.
yes
Your words make me feel a deep longing. We still long, groan, wait, and listen.
